Varieties of Democracy, or V-Dem, is a large network of democracy scholars, worldwide. The most important output of V-Dem (in addition to tons of research) is the V-Dem dataset, which covers more than 400 democracy-relevant variables. Extending from 1789 to the present and covering more than 200 countries, it is a primary resource for social scientists working on democracy and related topics. The current version of the dataset is v.10.
Being one of the PIs of V-Dem, I am involved in several aspects of it, and use V-Dem data extensively in my research. In particular, I have been engaged with the data collection for “Historical V-Dem“, extending V-Dem back from the 20th century to the French Revolution.
